I hope you had a great week. I am finally sharing this labor of love: my 1st fully lined wool coat on the blog today. I started making this coat, last January but threw it in my UFOs bin without even finishing up the shell. Yellow is one of my favorite colors and it's kinda rare to find a nice RTW one without breaking the bank. So I made it a mission to make my own fabulous yellow coat.
I got this 100% wool heavyweight fabric from Fabric Mart back in 2017 and decided to make Simplicity 8469. I used a black and white printed lining also from Fabric Mart. This coat was a relatively straightforward coat to make but it does require time. I am the kind of person that I like to start a sewing project and finish it that same day since I currently have very limited time to sew. Of course, that can't be the case when it come to making an outerwear.
I pre-shrunk my wool fabric using the wet towel and dryer method before cutting my fabric. It's also important to have the right pressing tools, I used a tailor's ham and seam roll and also best press spray I got from Joann's. I cut a size 14 and the finished result had enough ease that I can pair it on top of layers and chunky sweaters. Like I said earlier, I started the construction of the shell last year, and used about 2 days to finish it up last month. The lining was bagged and finished up with some slip-stitching. I also hand stitch the 8 snaps as required by the pattern instruction. I did not make any fit or style modifications. It was not a complicated coat to make but it does require time and patience.
Overall, making this coat was a wonderful experience and I am so glad I was able to conquer my fear of making fully lined wool coats. I especially love the waist tie detail and bold color of this coat, and I know it will be in my closet for as long as I can keep it. If you want more detail look and behind the scenes videos, I posted the process under the story highlights on my Instagram page (@raliat.oyinlola) under "My Yellow Coat." I am so looking forward to making more wool coats in the future...:)
Thank you so much for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend.
