How is your weekend going? As promised, I am sharing all the details about the yellow mixed prints dress I made for my birthday. One of the reasons I started sewing was to bring all my crazy ideas I never find in RTW pieces into action. I typically don't sketch my style ideas, I get an idea and play with it over and over, picturing and pretty much making it in my mind before I finally make it in reality. I should probably take learning how to sketch more seriously cos I always have too many style ideas floating in my brain...ha ha.
So I started playing with the idea of a mixed prints dress in one of my favorite colors (yellow) back in January. I wanted it to be a fitted pencil dress with a big puffy sleeves. I looked through my pattern stash to find a pattern that matches the description but couldn't find it, so I knew I had to mix some patterns to achieve the look. One thing I am not afraid of doing is mixing 2-3 patterns to achieve a look I want, as seen HEREHERE and HERE.
For this dress I used 3 patterns to create it, Vogue 1613 for the bodice, BHL "Charlotte" for the skirt and a modified view B of Simplicity 8506 for the sleeves. I cut a size 14 for the bodice, and 10/14 for the skirt. I didn't make any other fitting modification and it fits slightly big especially at the waist but that's due to the slight stretch of the fabric which I did not take into account when I made the dress.
Overall, I believe this DIY dress was a success cos it was better than I had pictured in my head. I love the mixture of the 2 prints and it matches perfectly with pumps I wore with it.
Do let me know, do you mix patterns or modify patterns to create a particular style idea?
Thank you so much for stopping by and have a wonderful Easter!
